I build tactile, meditative, relief based abstractions. Color, texture and loose geometric order organize repeated elements of repurposed textiles, wood, paper, mixed media and encaustic.
The Burnt Offering series began in 2010 in response to a wild fire that threatened to destroy my studio. I've come to respect and embrace this vital Southern California cycle of destruction by fire - followed by regeneration as both a physical and metaphoric reference in my work.
Layers of translucent color join marks burned into cloth, areas of texture and found or created objects to explore the universal imperative all living things share: growth and decay. The juxtaposition and resolution of the tension between chaos and order is at the heart of the work.
